Andris, Girts and Arvis have created history by becoming the first Latvians to play in a British PGA event.
Two months ago I was invited to play in a two day PGA event in the UK. After asking 3 of my closest Latvian friends would they be interested in playing this fantastic tournament, it was decided, we were off to Britain.
Now conditions were a little windy, infact you could hardly stand up or keep the ball on the tee. There were also 3 very nervous Latvians about to create history, and as their names were announced on the first tee box Andris Bergmanis became the first Latvian to hit a ball in a British PGA event, followed by Girts and Arvis. I must tell you even though they were extremely nervous they did Latvia proud, and hit fantastic shots of the first tee box. I must also mention that Andris became the first Latvian to putt his ball of the green into a bunker, which sent Girts, Arvis and myself to our knees as we could not stop laughing.
33 teams played in the event and we set our target of trying to finish in the top 20. After day one we were in 21st place, but after a slightly better score on day two we climbed up to 16th place. To say I was proud of the guys would be an understatement, they were brilliant.
On a personal level I was playing my first tournament for 5 years and a little nervous myself. With 4 European tour players in the event my target was to try and finish in the top 10. After an opening 68 I was in second place-tied, but after a second round of 69 I finished in first place, and I still cannot quite believe it now.
The PGA of Britain were so surprised we travelled so far to play in the event, they have decided to write about our experience in their magazine, that thousands of people will read. This is fantastic publicity for Latvian golf and Ozo golf course, and something we as a team will do again next year. Making people aware of golf in Latvia and attracting more visitors will only help the game grow here, and that is my intention over the next few years.
I will post the PGA article when it’s written for you all to read.
Once again thank you to my team, you made me very proud and you should be very proud of what you have done for Latvian golf.

Justin Griffiths toyed with the game of golf from the early age of two, and reached a scratch handicap at the age of fifteen. Before the age of sixteen Justin had successfully won the English and Midland Boys championships and went on to win the senior Shropshire and Herefordshire Professional championship on three occasions.
After turning professional in 1997, Justin experienced teaching positions in Austria and Germany, before accepting an instructional post within the Robinson hotel group which allowed him to work and travel worldwide.
Returning to the UK in 2003 Justin became head professional at Mollington Golf and Country club, and after writing the clubs course website was approached by World Golfer to write a series of articles on new golf complexes. This opportunity leads Justin to write over a dozen articles worldwide, including Malaysia, Canada and the Caribbean.
In 2009 Justin cemented his hobby of exercise by becoming a qualified fitness instructor, leading to a successful golf and fitness academy within the Shropshire Primary education system, and provides this service to over twenty schools.
His most recent golfing position saw Justin accept the challenge of expanding golf in Indonesia, with priority being set at a junior level. This concluded with the program successfully implementing new opportunities and continual development for children throughout the social structure of Indonesia, and not just those with a financial advantage.
